A large number of downloads looks impressive, but it says little about product value. An app may be installed through an ad, opened once, and abandoned without a useful action.
What happens after install
Start by measuring activation: the moment a user receives the promised outcome. For delivery, it might be a first order; for finance, a successful payment; for learning, a completed lesson. The event should represent value, not merely a screen view.
Five post-install metrics
- Time to the first valuable action.
- Share of users completing onboarding.
- Return after 1, 7, and 30 days.
- Repeat use of the core journey.
- Drop-off and exit reason at each step.
In App Store analytics, Apple separates discovery, engagement, referral source, and downstream actions. This helps distinguish high-quality traffic from accidental visits.
Compare cohorts, not only averages. Users from different campaigns, countries, or app versions may have very different experiences. Cohort analysis shows whether an onboarding improvement changed behavior or merely coincided with seasonal demand.
Downloads matter as the top of the funnel. Product decisions should be based on whether users achieved an outcome, returned, and were willing to continue the relationship.
