A mobile product can have hundreds of metrics, but a team cannot manage all of them equally well. The right KPIs connect a business goal to observable user behavior and show where a problem actually occurs.

Start with the outcome

Define the result the product creates: a completed order, regular learning, a paid subscription, or a resolved request. Then describe the events that lead there. An install is the beginning of a journey, not proof of value.

A basic metric system

  • Activation: does a new user reach the first useful action?
  • Retention: do they return after a day, week, and month?
  • Conversion: do they complete the business outcome?
  • Quality: can they do it without errors, freezes, or support?

App Store Connect Analytics follows the path from discovery to download, engagement, and purchases. The same logic works outside the App Store: a team should see the whole chain, not one final number.

Keep one primary metric for a period and several diagnostic metrics. When the primary metric falls, diagnostics can show whether the cause is acquisition, onboarding, performance, or the offer. Do not change KPI definitions during an experiment, or comparisons lose meaning.

A good KPI system does not create more reports. It shortens the path from signal to decision and gives the team a shared definition of “the product is working.”
